Late night extra

In a nutshell DH is home and is already in bed and asleep. His blood pressure is still too high, but low enough for him to be discharged and monitored at home. My dear brother-in-law kindly drove me to the hospital to collect him late this afternoon. I’m very happy and very tired and about to go to bed myself, but I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank-you to you all for your kindness, support and friendship. Life will be a bit different for DH and me in future, but we’ll deal with it – together, thank God.

  7. Thank heavens. High BP can be managed very successfully, speaking from experience of a similar boat to yours. Sweet dreams.

    1. I don't even remember dreaming, DB. :-) Today we've been bust researching BP management to satisfy DH that the medication prescribed for him is the best for the job. Typical!

    1. It's odd, Kathy. He can be away for a week on a visit to his mother's and I'm fine. He was away for 24 hours in hospital and I didn't know what to do with myself. Now it's up to me to make the diet adjustments needed and encourage the exercise he's been told to take.

  13. Thank you for letting us know, Perpetua. It´s a bit like family, this blogging thing, isn´t it? I do hope there are not too many obvious effects of DH´s experience, not too much adjusting and hopefully no struggling.
Hope you had a wonderful and restorative night´s sleep. Onward, onward!

    1. The best night's sleep for ages. :-) You're so right about the blogging family feeling. We do really care what happens to our blog friends and I've had the most wonderful proof of that. DH is still tired and will have to get used to the medication, but we'll get there. I'm determined about that. :-)

  19. Beloved has had many TIAs; but none for several years now since his medication has been adjusted. TIAs are not life threatening, in fact, many people have them without even noticing, particularly as they get older. Mini strokes are not at all like strokes but they need medicating.

So calm down, both of you. The world is not coming to an end.

Best of luck and get well soon to DH.

    1. Friko, it wasn't so much the TIA that had the ambulance personnel turning pale but DH's astronomical BP readings on the way to hospital, far higher than anything I'd ever heard of. No, TIAs are not life-threatening, but what may follow them can easily be so, so I'm afraid I can't be quite so blasé about this as you, until DH's BP comes down to something close to normal. Nevertheless, thank you for the good wishes.

  21. Hello Perpetua, only just caught up with your news. Oh that's tough! Especially as you've had to put your own health needs on hold - having gone through all that anticipation. Delighted to hear DH is doing well. As someone who's been through something similar with OH, just to reassure, it is initially very scary, but better to get a mild "early warning" - it then gives you both the chance to look at medications, diet etc. Drugs for high blood pressure work very well. You'll be surprised how quickly life gets back to normal with only a few changes. (MOH's got a monitor and takes his blood pressure every morning - just helps him to remember to be sensible.) Hope you will then be able to get your own health issues sorted. :)

    1. Thanks, Sue. It's been a week we won't forget, that's for sure. Sorry to hear that your husband had the same experience and yes, it's truly scary. DH's left hand coordination still isn't back to normal. which now means that technically this was a mild stroke, not a TIA, but it's improving, thank goodness. But he's being good about taking his medication (which is a first for him) and we're gradually making the changes you mention. As for my op, it's needed, but not urgent and will happen in the end. :-)

  22. Oh my goodness! I just got "all caught up" and I can't believe you've had so many starts and stops over the past week or so! I'm very concerned for DH, and hope that even as I'm writing this you are both finding it possible to rest. This has to have been a very shocking event for you both, but what comes to mind quickly is how wonderful that DH took the warning signs of a stroke seriously, and then made arrangements for care so immediately! I'm tremendously sorry you are having to postpone your own surgery. I'm sure you really want to get this behind you, and to continue to postpone it has to raise your own blood pressure just a bit? You sound like you're both handling all the changes and upheaval very well, but I doubt it's been easy. I do hope this week gives you some rest, Perpetua. (breathe lighter)

    1. Yes, a lot can change in a week, Debra. Thankfully DH is improving, though his hand coordination isn't right yet and we're both still rather tired, which means much earlier bedtimes than usual.. We're very aware it could have been very much worse, so we're making changes to try to prevent a recurrence. We'd both got a bit slack about diet and very slack about exercise, but that is changing. :-) As for my op, we can't do anything about it until DH is allowed to drive again, which won't be be before at least late October. Hopefully we can get a new date soon after that, but we need to make sure he's fit and well again first.

  23. Oh my. I am just catching up and sorry to hear about your husband's recent scare. We went through this same thing with my husband last fall. I thought he was have a stroke. They were suspicious at the hospital also. In the end, a TIA could not be ruled out, and he spent three days in the hospital. He continues to fight high blood pressure. It is scary! I hope thing are improving with your husband. I will continue reading and catching up.

    1. I'm glad to say that he's very much better now, though the fine co-ordination in his left hand isn't quite back to normal yet. It was in fact a minor stroke, but thankfully it revealed the high blood pressure so that something could be done about before it causes more problems. As with your husband it's proving to be a bit of battle to get his BP back to where it should be, but it is improving. As you say, it's a very scary experience and I'm so glad your husband is doing so well now.
