A comic interlude

For the last few days I’ve been trying, and dismally failing, to produce enough coherent thought for a proper post.  As soon as this dratted cough lets me get a halfway decent night’s sleep, I’ll be back with some real writing. In the meantime, here is an absolute gem by the wonderful Richard Stilgoe, first brought to my attention by David Cloake, the inimitable Vernacular Vicar.  Thanks, David. J

  1. Hi Perpetua - Best wishes for a speedy recovery to good health. And although I have heard the Richard Stilgoe piece previously, it still is good fun to listen to it once again.

  2. Thanks, ricky. The cold has gone, thank goodness, but the cough is being lazy. Yes, it's a wonderful piece, isn't it? Makes me laugh every time I listen to it.

  3. I'm sorry you have the cough...it really pulls you down and saps your energy...but the Stilgoe was wonderful..I've played it twice and am still laughing.

  4. Thanks, Fly. I think it's at last on the mend, but really taking its time. Sigh...

Very glad you enjoyed the Stilgoe so much. I think it's fantastic, so much so that I'm fully expecting to find the CD in my Christmas stocking. :-)

  5. Feel better soon, Perpetua! Not being able to sleep is so draining. I hope you didn't actually watch the video, as all the laughing will no doubt lead to more coughing!

  6. Thanks, Penny. Here's hoping it will all soon be in the past. At the minute I can't stop yawning...

You obviously appreciated the marvellous Stilgoe song. I think all clergy must have met a Mrs or Mr Beamish at some time. I managed to refrain from watching it again this time, but will do so as soon as I can. :-)

  7. I'd forgotten how much I liked Richard Stilgoe! Imagine if he and Victoria Wood had got together. This had me giggling this morning - and then coughing as I'm in a similar state of trying to throw off a bug. Hopefully we've managed to get them done and out of the way before Christmas really starts!
    Axxx

  8. Poor Annie! Much fellow-feeling heading your way from up north. Why do we always catch these things at the most inconvenient times?

Glad the Richard Stilgoe song was worth a coughing fit. The mere idea of a combination of him and Victoria Wood has me giggling out loud. A match made in heaven, methinks.

  9. Hope you are feeling better!
I know that "blogger's block" feeling, it is always a good idea to post something then, no matter how small to get going again. Hope you are soon back on your feet!

  10. Thanks, Sue. I don't feel too bad in myself now, except for the lack of proper sleep which is very wearing. I'm not sure I'm blocked in terms of not having ideas - just too tired to put them down coherently. Still, Mrs Beamish fills the gap very nicely. :-)

  11. Hello Perpetua:
We are sorry to read that you are not well and we do so hope that you shall soon recover from what is ailing you. We so enjoyed the comic interlude, so cleverly done, and hope that it has cheered you too whilst you are feeling rather under the weather.

  12. Thank you so much for the good wishes, Jane and Lance. It was only a nasty cold, but since I'm asthmatic, there's always the risk of a bad cough and this is one of those times. It will pass....

I'm very glad you enjoyed the song. As you say, it's so cleverly done and reminded me just how good Richard Stilgoe and Peter Skellern were as a musical partnership.

  14. Oh I did enjoy watching that! Funny thing, this morning as I was coming down the stairs Tom Lehrer's 'Vatican Rag' danced through my head and I wondered if I dared find it on You Tube and post it!!

Hope you get rid of that nagging cough sooner! Nothing is worse when settling down for a long winter's nap...

  15. You're very welcome, Kathy. It's far too good not to share with one's friends. Thanks for the good wishes. I think the cough is starting to improve, so hopefully it will be gone before long.

  16. I bet you did, Broad! I think we've all met a Mrs Beamish or two in our various churches. :-) Go on, post the Tom Lehrer if you can find it. His songs are all fun to listen to.

I'm afraid I just don't do naps. Never have been able to and even with advancing age still can't, though I envy those who can. This is why disturbed sleep at night makes me so tired. Sigh...

  17. Dear Perpetua - I hope you feel better soon.

Oh, sincere "thank yous" from the granddaughter of a Lay Reader in the Anglican Church of New Zealand. I'm sending this to the late Lay Reader's eldest son - my dear Dad!

  18. Many thanks, Mickle. I'm starting to see some improvement now, thank goodness.

Glad you enjoyed this fantastic song and hope your Dad does too. With his father's church involvement, I'm sure he'll appreciate it.
